The 2002-03 growing season provided good spring and summer weather, with enough rain for healthy shoot growth, and enough sunshine for good fruit set. The late summer and early autumn weather was warm and dry, and ideal for ripening the grapes.
Importantly the daytime temperatures were warm enough to fully ripen the grapes, but cool enough to retain the vibrant fruit flavours, producing an intensely flavoured and concentrated wine
This Vavasour Riesling was hand harvested from the Vavasour vineyard in the Awatere Valley during the cool early morning. The grapes were then processed quickly at the Vavasour winery. Fermentation was conducted with carefully selected yeast to add an extra dimension to the array of fruit flavours present in the wine.
Vavasour Riesling 2003 is a pale straw colour. The nose shows lime/citrus notes, and the palate is finely structured, and exhibits lime and mineral characters with rich stone fruit flavours on the finish. The style is just off dry.
Although this Riesling is drinking well now, it will reward with careful cellaring for up to 5 years.
The 2003 Vavasour Riesling is sealed with screw cap to ensure optimum quality.
