Vavasour Awatere Valley Pinot Noir 2004
Otago Daily Times July 26, 2006 - Charmian Smith
...This wine is drinking superbly. It is perfumed with lovely red fruit - morello cherries and redcurrants; there is a hint of savouriness and spice and a depth to the palate that suggests complexity, and it's well structured, with dusty tannins and a long, supple finish.

Wine Pick
Vavasour wines are the pioneers of winemaking in the Awatere Valley and this wine shows why many others have followed their lead. The translucent deep garnet colour hints at the refined elegance of this wine. Sweet spiced plum and soft savoury aromas are reflected in the intensly concentrated flavours...serve with slow roasted duck and you have a match made in heaven.

Look: Dark purple red.
Smell: Fine, elegant nose already has a complex cloud of details, part spice, part earth, part fruit, but nothing definable.
Taste: Impeccable impact is fine with intense fruit flavours, that run with depth into a light but firm, slightly constrained mid palate. Supple yet nicely grippy with a light grain of tannin and some herbal notes amongst the warm fruit. Traces of mushrooms and oak too, add to the detail. Long, dry, graceful finish lingers beautifully, invites the next mouthful.
