Vavasour Claudia's Vineyard Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2004
Gourmet Traveller Aug/Sept 2006
90 Points
A price record for NZ sav blanc, according to my database, It's a hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed wine with 10 months' ageing on the yeast lees. Masses of fruit, plenty of winemaking influence. It's sauvignon but not as we know it. Good drinking now or in the next 4 years.

Peter went apoplectic -"it's like passionfruit icing on apricot cake". Zingy acids and warming alcohol blended seamlessly with the tropical flavours that swept across the palate. At the back of the palate the citrusy, creamy rich flavours lingered on into a surprisingly clean finish and aftertaste that went on forever. Very more-ish and elegant.

Look: Light, golden straw.
Smell: Fragrant straw bouquet is fine and tinged with minerals.
Taste: Impact has a lovely core of fruit intensity and an almost sea-like tang of minerals. Mid palate is firm, deep and showing some nice flavour complexes that linger on in a tight, mineral infused finish that is long and interesting. Impressive wine, with detail and elegance.
