Vavasour Anna's Vineyard Awatere Valley Chardonnay 2004
Cuisine Magazine, November 2006
The five-star Vavasour Anna's Vineyard Awatere Valley Chardonnay 2004 is a wine of arresting power. Vavasour's tradition of distinguished Chardonnay's stretches back to 1990, but the 2004 Anna's Vineyard is the most memorable yet by winemaker Glenn Thomas.

A new flagship chardonnay from Vavasour that deserves its premium price. Intense citrus flavours with plenty of nutty, mealy influence and a solid helping of oak. Great now but showing plenty of potential. Good drinking now or in the next 6 years.

Very expressive of Awatere terroir, those typical citrus and mineral flavours combine with a hint of stonefruit to create a fairly lucious wine with just a touch of austerity to give it some class.

Light straw gold with buttery oak on the nose and ripe, rich, creamy, buttery flavours packed with spicy oak, peachy fruit, an underpinning of citrus and a long, smoky, satisfying finish with a lingering savoury aftertaste. The is the style of Chardonnay that we know and love, and it's ready to drink now.

Geoff Kelly Wine Reviews, February 2006
Rich lemon to lemonstraw. Bouquet is sensational, the kind of chardonnay smell one might encounter in a bottle labelled Corton-Charlemagne. There is wonderful waxy stonefruit chardonnay fruit, and superb mealy lees-autolysis and barrel-ferment components, somewhere in character between apple shortcake and fine baguette crust. Truly, this is a beautiful chardonnay bouquet. Palate does not lessen the impact, with a weight of fruit which is tactile, richer even than the 2004 Kumeu River Maté’s, yet it is fresh and elegant, the high alcohol surprisingly well-hidden in the big body. This is great chardonnay, one of the finest ever produced in New Zealand. Cellar 5 – 10 years.

If this wine didn't have the silky fruit quality that is unequivocally New Zealand in origin, some people might confuse its mineral and citrus steel elegance as chablis of extremely high quality. But there is that fruit, rising from deep within the wine to create an impression of lush romance to balance its austere intellect.
